The 1st time I found a lump (DICU) was during my routine ‘shower check’ in the morning. I had always done breast exams and found this to be the easiest and most convenient way to do them. Circling around my breast I felt a small but very hard little ‘BB’ at 7:00. I monitored it for a few days before calling my doctor to have it checked out. It was finally identified through the mammogram that I insisted upon, along with a cluster of microcalcifications encapsulating that little ‘BB.’ The 2nd time, it was found on a routine mammogram with the same microcalcifications, which, I ended up debating with the radiologist about. He said, “Well, you’ve already had breast cancer once, you’re too young, you’re not going to get it again.” I simply insisted that I wanted my film and took it directly to a 2nd opinion surgeon, who confirmed my suspicions of another cancer (DICU). This 3rd (& FINAL!) time that I found a lump (Stage I), was 5 days after a ‘negative’ mammogram. I was sitting down in the evening and had a sudden itch on my left breast/nipple area and for some reason, instead of itching it through my clothes, I went straight in with my finger, under my bra and felt the same, familiar, hard ‘BB” lump, immediately – only bigger. I knew what it was. So to this, I say, DO YOUR SELF EXAMS!! And of special note: All 3 cancers that I have had are NOT recurrences but new primaries - very important scenario to understand!
