The key is that cancer is actually not a single disease, it is a large collection of diseases that share a common feature, cells growing out of control. All of our cells share a common set of about 20,000 genes. You can think of these genes as different parts of a very complicated machine. While there is only one way for a machine to WORK perfectly (all the genes are OK), there are lots of ways to BREAK a machine of this kind. If you alter/stop the function of a set of gears, the machine will not function properly. There are lots of ways to break a machine. Just think of a car. All kinds of things can break that will make the car not function. Each of these different problems requires a different type of repair. This would be analogous to the different types of cancer (breast or other) and the different treatments used.
