While people seek psychotherapy for many different reasons, I do see some common concerns. Managing fears of recurrence and coping with "scan anxiety" is present for most people. The goal is often to help people build skills around calming these fearful thoughts and managing anxiety with new behaviors they can learn to do in stressful moments. People often feel hurt or disappointed in loved ones who aren't supporting them in helpful ways. Allowing space for these feelings of anger, sadness and even guilt can be helpful. The goal is often work with people as they learn how to strengthen boundaries and protect themselves or find new ways of communicating their experiences and needs in ways others can hear them more accurately. Cancer can also leave someone feeling out of synch and disconnected from "life as they once knew it". Reframing the cancer experience as grief resonates deeply for some people. Working through the feelings of loss and supporting someone as they come to understand their life now after cancer takes time.
