A side effect is any result of a medical treatment that is not the desired effect. Side effects can range from very mild to severe. Each person responds uniquely to medical treatments. Tracking side effects can be an important part of following or deciding to discontinue a treatment plan.

The best response I can give to being prepared is by telling the story of what happened to my mom (24 yr colorectal cancer survivor) who went to ER for UTI was given Levaquin by IV and ended up with Neuropathy. She later realized after the urgent moment there were previous reactions to this drug but in the moment with excessive bleeding there was no time to check records... I suppose. She now wears a medical alert bracelet and she and I blog and spread awareness about this and other medical lessons learned.

Please read her blog post for the full story.
