Prostate cancer is usually asymptomatic during the early stages. This is why prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening is useful for men with at least a 10 year life expectancy with the goal of detecting prostate cancers at a curable stage. Indeed, PSA screening was recently shown to reduce both metastatic disease and prostate cancer mortality in a large randomized trial.

Advanced prostate cancer can be associated with symptoms due to local tumor growth (such as blood in the urine or urinary obstruction), or from spread to the bone (ex: bone pain, fractures).
