There seem to be so many different things that can help a patient be more healthy and help prevent cancer, how can a patient get started?

To get started with cancer prevention, pick any area that you'll be able to stick with. You can look at your risk factors, get the diagnostic tests and labs done, and start with improving your diet and lifestyle, which are your greatest risks. Even if you have the BRCA gene, which significantly increases your risk for breast (and other) cancers, not everyone with that gene mutation gets cancer. Diet (and lifestyle) change whether the defective gene get expressed. Start where you can be successful and you will feel motivated to continue in other areas.
