Having breast cancer at a young age has helped to shape who I am today. When is it okay to tell someone I am dating about my cancer history?

Disclosing your cancer history is a personal decision. Some people prefer to share the news early and others feel more comfortable establishing a foundation of trust before they tell someone about their diagnosis. Considering the different types of reactions someone could have when you disclose could be a way of preparing yourself and making a decision about your readiness. Are you ready to answer questions? How would you handle a "bad" reaction? Articulating the differences you recognize in yourself since being diagnosed or what you have learned along the way are also important. This information is unique and personal to you and could help to shift the conversation away from the red hot glare of the word cancer so you can focus more on the deeper significance of this experience for you.
