Urologists follow protocols that vary slightly from each other. A popular protocol followed is PSA testing and rectal exam (with a finger in the urologist’s office) every three months for two years, then every six months as long as PSA level is stable; and also prostate biopsy at one year, then every three years until 80 years of age. Additionally, an ultrasound of the prostate might be done on alternate visits. If the risk is found to decrease based on the PSA, ultrasound or biopsy, your urologist might recommend stopping watchful waiting and instead proceed with treatment by surgery or radiotherapy.
