Breast Cancer Vaccine

Share Emailz

Therapeutic vaccines targeting specific proteins are being tested, some with promising results. The first preventive breast cancer vaccine was developed by Professor Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic and published last year in Nature Medicine (May 2010). The vaccine is 100% effective in preventing breast cancer in mice and also capable of slowing the growth of tumors that have already formed. It was also effective against a cell line of triple-negative breast cancer. Tuohy's vaccine is ready to Phase I studies in women, provided he receives the funding necessary to get the clinical trials funded: approximately 5 million to start and, likely, 20 million to fund through Phase III studies.

Tuohy developed a vaccine that is 100% effective in preventing breast cancer in mice and is also capable of slowing the growth of tumor that have already formed. He published his results in Nature Medicine, May 2010. He is ready to test the vaccine for safety in women - as soon as he receives the money to do so: approximately $5 million to get him started. Unfortunately, Komen has turned him down three times, and Avon refuses to even consider it. What is peculiar is that the National Breast Cancer Coalition announced last month the creation of the Artemis Project whose goal is to develop a preventive breast cancer vaccine by 2016! Why not just fund Tuohy's vaccine?

Scientists have known about both the breast cancer virus as well as a vaccine to prevent and to cure for many years. Sadly, most of the reasearch lacks funding, so it may take many more years for women to benefit from either. To learn more about the theories and research, please visit http://elynjacobs.blogspot.com/2011/07/why-race-is-going-in-wrong-direction.html. In this blog I present links to several studies currently being done. It is my hope that these brilliant researchers get the funding needed to test their theories.
