Are there typically options for the location of the incision for a lumpectomy? How do I ask my breast surgeon about this?

Often the best incision is one that is directly over the tumor or very close to it, to minimize the amount of normal breast tissue removed or disrupted. However depending on the tumor size, location in the breast, or breast size, various oncoplastic techniques (combining oncologic or cancer surgery techniques with cosmetic or plastic surgical techniques) will allow for incisions in a more cosmetically acceptable part of the breast, such as around the areolar border, or in the inframammary fold (the "bra line" below the breast). Simple ask your surgeon during your preoperative visit where the anticipated incision will be, approximate length of the incision, and are there any other options.
