Professional Statement

Louise Aronson MD, MFA is Associate Professor of Geriatrics at UCSF where she directs the Northern California Geriatric Education Center, which provides geriatrics training to health professionals and trainees across northern California, the UCSF Medical Humanities program, and the Pathways to Discovery Program, UCSF’s research and scholarship career development program for students, residents and fellows. She also serves as an educational leader and mentor in the Division of Geriatrics, associate editor for the JAMA Care of the Aging Patient series, and Director of Public Medical Communication for the Program for the Aging Century. Her clinical practice is through the Housecalls Program where she provides primary and palliative care to diverse, vulnerable, homebound older adults in underserved San Francisco neighborhoods. Her research and scholarship focus on geriatrics education, reflective learning, and public medical writing. She is the UCSF School of Medicine lead faculty on reflective learning and directs the school’s Narrative Medicine program. She has developed innovative curricula and metrics for geriatrics training for non-geriatricians, interprofessional geriatrics education, reflection in medical education, asynchronous scholarly skills training, and use of writing to harness the expertise and unique experiences of clinicians and medical scientists in service of health and health care. She has received additional training, through fellowships and competitive programs, in clinical and educational research, narrative medicine and educational leadership. In addition to her medical career, Dr. Aronson holds an MFA in fiction writing.
